The New Dining Trend That’s Terrifying Unprepared Restaurant Owners

According to a recent Zagat dining trends survey, Americans eat out an average of 4.9 times per week, spending an average of $36.40 per person. In fact, consumer spending in the quick service restaurant sector reached almost $300 billion in the US alone in 2018, according to Statista. And increasingly, those dining dollars are being spent on orders to go—placed on mobile phones. It’s safe to say that online food ordering is undeniably the wave of the future.

In today’s busy world, the ability to order food online is paramount. As the numbers below show, there’s no denying the meteoric upward trend of the mobile ordering industry. And if restaurants want to compete, protect their market share, and grow their business, they can’t afford not to jump on the bandwagon and provide their customers with what they want—a mobile ordering app that allows them to order food directly from their favorite restaurant while earning loyalty rewards.

Consider the following:

  • Over a quarter of all Americans order takeout or delivery at least once a week
  • Digital ordering and delivery has grown 300 percent faster than dine-in traffic since 2014

  • Approximately 45 percent of consumers say that offering mobile ordering or loyalty programs would encourage them to use online services more often
  • Almost 35 percent of diners would definitely or most likely use an order ahead app at their favorite restaurant if it was available
  • Orders placed via smartphone and mobile apps will become a $38 billion industry
  • One in four consumers say they spend more when ordering off premise (according to a survey conducted by Technomic)

While these numbers clearly indicate that the online ordering industry is on the rise, and in fact critical to restaurants wanting to retain and satisfy the needs of their customers, there’s one more startling statistic: only 26 percent of restaurants surveyed had mobile ordering apps, according to a Forbes study!

In order to be competitive in a growing digital and tech savvy world, where convenience is key and mobile phones are used for everything, restaurants are missing out if they don’t have an online ordering app.
